Butterfly species in this family are generally characterized by white, yellow, or orange wings, frequently with black or greenish markings. The word butterfly may have originated from some butter-colored species in this family. Caterpillars are mostly green.
Often swarms around wet sand to take in diluted salts.
Adults feed on nectar. Larvae feed on vegetation.
Different species occur in all habitats except for extreme deserts.
