The Southern Highlands feature rugged mountains and dramatic elevation changes that form a variety of habitats. They are home to numerous plant species, including juniper and wild almond trees, and numerous animal species. The mammalian species include the caracal, rock hyrax, and Nubian ibex. The rugged rock cliffs are ideal nesting sites for a number of birds of prey.
The Southern Highlands extend southwards from Shobak to Ras al-Naqb. They include the Dana Nature Reserve.
