The Shobak Castle is the earliest Crusader fortress in Jordan, built in 1115 CE. The castle was surrendered to Saladin in 1189 CE, one year after he conquered the Karak Castle. The Shobak Castle was refortified in the following centuries by the Mamluks. The castle includes massive walls, towers, two churches, an olive-press, cisterns, baths, and a spring at the bottom of a deep well.
