Flat, oval, body with a black and red pattern; long wings; 4-segmented antennae; bulging black eyes; small ocelli that distinguish this bug from firebugs (see Eyes and Ocelli).
Occasionally gather in large numbers, causing crop damage. Stores the toxic ingredients of its food plants, making it unpalatable to predators.
Most seed bug species feed on seeds. Some feed on insects, plant sap, or blood.
