The Qatranah Fort is a two-story Ottoman fort, built in 1559 CE to guard a water reservoir on the pilgrimage road. The reservoir is a large open tank supplied by flood water in rainy seasons. Dams and channels diverted the water, first through a small settling tank to collect the sediments, then to the reservoir.
