White plumage; black forehead, crown, and nape; black patches on wings, tail, and back; long, black, up-curved bill; bluish-gray legs. Juveniles have duller black patches.
Forages by sweeping its long bill side to side in shallow water. Breeds in small colonies. Builds nests on the ground.
Crustaceans and insects.
Passage migrant and winter visitor; occasional summer breeder. Occurs around temporary and artificial freshwater wetlands, including dams, water treatment plants, city parks, and golf courses.
