Equus hemionus onager
Fast runner, larger than a donkey, and more horse-like. Reddish body; white belly; black, upright mane; black stripe down the back; black tail tip.
Grazes mainly in the cooler hours of the day. Timid; avoids people and other animals. Communicates over long distances with loud, raspy brays.
Feeds on grasses, foliage, and fruit.
Once extinct in Jordan, currently bred in captivity in the Shomari Reserve for reintroduction into the wild. Occurs in dry, grassy plains and marginal deserts in southeastern Jordan.
