There are over 3,000 orb-weaver spider species worldwide. They are generally characterized by bright colors or striking patterns, banded legs, and bulging or spiny abdomens. They build round webs with radial spokes and concentric spirals of silk. Some species in the Argiope genus stabilize their webs with zigzag bands (stablimentum).
Timid. Mainly nocturnal. Females rest head down in the center of the web. Males are smaller and often on the move in search of females.
Widespread in urban gardens, fields, and woodlands.
