White or light-gray plumage; black crown and back; red eyes; short neck and legs. Juveniles have white-spotted brown plumage.
Forages mostly at dusk by ambushing its prey.
Night herons feed on aquatic animals and small mammals.
Migrates south through Jordan in autumn and north in spring. Scarce around wetlands, rivers, and reservoirs in Azraq, Aqaba, and the highlands.
