Males have gray plumage, green head, brown breast, black lower back, blue speculum, and flat yellow bill with a black tip. Females have mottled brown plumage and dark-brown bill.
Forms large noisy flocks. Forages by dabbling in shallow water with its tail up in the air. Filter-feeds by straining food out of water with its flat bill.
Aquatic vegetation and some insects.
Winter visitor to bodies of water in the Azraq region and rivers and reservoirs in northwestern Jordan. Rare in summer.
