Also known as “opiliones”. There are about 1,900 harvestman species worldwide. Harvestmen have eight long legs, the second pair used as antennae is the longest. Despite their resemblance, harvestmen are not spiders. Their body sections are fused into one compact structure, while spiders have two body sections (cephalothorax and abdomen); they have two eyes, while spiders have 8; and they lack silk and venom glands.
Mainly nocturnal. Harmless to humans. Has a foul-smelling chemical defense.
Harvestmen feed on small insects, vegetation, dung, fungi, and dead animals.
