A total of seven Acanthodactylus species have been recorded in Jordan. They are characterized by fringed toes used for digging. They have variable colors and patterns, comb-like ear margin, pointy nose, large head scales, and tail longer than the body. Females and juveniles are smaller with more pronounced patterns.
Territorial and aggressive towards other lizards. Moves frequently to oversee a large territory. Usually stops in the shade and waves its tail to assert dominance. Runs long distances or hides if disturbed.
Insects and other smaller lizards.
Different species occur in different deserts and semi-deserts, including Azraq, Dana Nature Reserve, Petra, Wadi Rum, and Ma’an.
