The fennec fox has the smallest body and the largest ears of all the canines. It is well adapted to the desert: the large ears dissipate heat, which minimizes panting and conserves water; the yellowish coat blends with sand and reflects sunlight; the paws are covered with hair to protect against the hot sand; and it gets most of its water from food.
Nocturnal. Avoids humans. Fast digger; builds large dens with large entrances in the sand.
Feeds on insects, lizards, rodents, birds, eggs, and fruit.
Rare and vulnerable species. Occurs in southwestern Jordan, including the sandy desert of Wadi Rum and the Dana Nature Reserve.
