Slender body; brown upperparts; white underparts; short legs; webbed feet adapted for swimming; small ears; black nostrils that close underwater; long whiskers; muscular, pointed tail. Males are larger than females.
Territorial. Mostly solitary and nocturnal. Skillful swimmer and diver.
Otters feed mainly on fish, some insects, birds, amphibians, and other small animals.
Vulnerable species. Occurs in the Jordan and Yarmouk rivers. Builds dens on riverbanks accessible from underwater.
