Gray upperparts with brown bars and streaks; lighter, barred underparts; gray crown with dark streaks; brown cheeks and throat; short, black bill. Males have white wing and tail spots.
Forages mainly at sundown. Lies camouflaged on stony grounds during the day.
Preys mainly on moths and other flying insects.
Breeds in Europe; winters in Africa; migrates south through Jordan in autumn and north in spring. Occurs mainly in the Azraq region and in some valleys of the Dead Sea region. Nests on bare ground.
