Reddish-brown and yellow upperparts; blue underparts; green wings; reddish wing patch, small or absent in females; white forehead; yellow throat; black eyestripe and bill. Juveniles have greener upperparts.
Catches bees and wasps in mid air. Removes bee stings by hitting them against hard surfaces.

Migrates south through Jordan in autumn and north in spring. Some breed in Jordan in summer. Occurs in the Azraq region and western Jordan, including Amman, Wadi Hidan, and Aqaba. Nests in colonies on sandy hillsides and river banks.
