Dead Sea Graben

017- Dead Sea
The Earth’s crust floats on liquid magma. As the Arabian and African plates drift apart, the rift line tends to stretch and swell under internal pressure. It eventually cracks in parallel step faults, dropping the middle section called a graben (meaning ditch in German). The Jordan Valley is a series of grabens, the lowest of which is the Dead Sea region. While the Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth at 418 meters below sea level, the Dead Sea graben lies much lower, buried under 14 kilometers of sediment washed down the rift margins.
The Jordan Valley, which extends the entire length of western Jordan and includes the Jordan River Valley (Ghor), the Dead Sea, and Wadi Araba.
