Large rodent with a tail and lower body covered with long quills (modified, hollow hairs with prickly tips). Long claws used for climbing trees and digging burrows. Porcupines are not closely related to hedgehogs. They are distinguished by a round nose, more hair, longer quills, and they do not roll into a ball.
Nocturnal; moves slowly; climbs trees in search of food. Raises its quills and retreats backwards when threatened. Swings its tail in self-defense. It is a myth that the porcupine shoots quills; quills snap off only after sticking to another object.
Feeds on roots, tree bark, and fruit.
Mountainous areas in western Jordan, including the Dana Nature Reserve and the Dead Sea region.
