A total of 23 cranesbill species in the Erodium and Geranium genera have been recorded in Jordan. They are characterized by long fruit resembling bird bills. When dry, the seeds split and spiral into corkscrews. When moistened by rain, they unscrew, driving the seed heads into the soil. Most cranesbills have pink or purple flowers with five petals. In some species, the petals are forked so deeply that there appear to be ten. Erodiums are distinguished by flowers with five stamens, while geraniums have ten.
