White plumage; long, spatulate, black bill; long, black legs. During breeding season, adults develop a drooping crest, yellow breast patch, and yellow bill-tip.
Forages in shallow water. Flies with an outstretched neck.
Aquatic insects, mollusks, crustaceans, and other small animals.
Breeds in southern Eurasia; winters in Africa; migrates south through Jordan in autumn and north in spring. Flies over western Jordan and roosts in wetlands such as the Kafrain Dam (north of the Dead Sea) and Kirbat al-Samra (north of Zarqa).
