Dark-gray plumage; dark-brown upperparts; white wing and undertail patches; red bill with a tapered yellow tip; red forehead shield; yellow legs; long toes. Juveniles lack the red forehead shield.
Swims and forges like a duck. Walks, aided by its long toes, on mud and floating vegetation. Nests on the ground among dense vegetation.
Leaves and some aquatic animals.
Small numbers occur near water sources, including Azraq, Zarqa River, and reservoirs. Additional small numbers migrate to Jordan in winter. Moorhens nest on the ground among dense vegetation.
