Bright blue upperparts with a green glow; orange underparts and ear patch; white throat and neck-sides; dark bill with a reddish base; red legs.
Timid. Perches near water at regular locations. Swoops down to catch fish and insects.
Fish, insects, and crustaceans.
Migrates south through Jordan in autumn and north in spring. Small numbers winter in Jordan. Some are suspected to breed in Jordan in summer. Passage migrants fly over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, Aqaba, and river valleys such as Wadi Mujib. Nests in burrows on river banks.
