Gray plumage; black flight feathers; black head and neck with white eye-streak running down its neck; small, red crown-patch.
Slow walker. Leaps with open wings during its display dance. Flies with an outstretched neck, often in flocks that form a V-formation.
Feeds on vegetation, insects, small mammals, and small birds.
Common winter visitor to the wetlands and flood pools of the Azraq and Basalt Desert. Passage migrants continue south in autumn and fly north in spring over the valleys of western Jordan and Aqaba.
