أم أربعة وأربعين
Mildly venomous; harmless to humans. A total of 22 centipede species have been recorded in Jordan. Centipede is from the Latin centum meaning hundred, and ped meaning foot. Centipedes have a reddish-brown, flattened, segmented body; a pair of antennae; and a pair of mandibles. The first pair of legs after the head has mildly venomous claws used to paralyze its prey. The last pair of legs resembles antennas to confuse predators. Despite their alarming appearance, centipedes are beneficial for feeding on insects. Centipedes differ from millipedes in that they have one pairs of legs on each body segment, while millipedes have two. Some centipedes are mildly venomous, while millipedes are non-venomous. Centipedes are fast, while millipedes are slow. Centipedes feed on insects, while millipedes feed on vegetation.
Mainly nocturnal. Raises its rear end when threatened.
Moist microhabitats under rocks, decaying vegetation, or burrows.
