Struthio camelus syriacus
The largest of all living birds, the ostrich has a small flat head, large eyes with long eyelashes, excellent eyesight, long powerful legs, and long naked neck. Males have a black plumage and white tail. Females have a gray-brown plumage. While most birds have four toes and some have three, the ostrich has only two.
Flightless. Fast runner and can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h.
Vegetables, fruit, grasses, seeds, and small animals.
Once common in Jordan, the Arabian ostrich is now extinct. The last dying Arabian ostrich was found north of Petra in 1966. The related blue-necked ostrich is currently bred in captivity in the Shomari Reserve for introduction into the wild.
