White coat for reflecting sunlight; brown patches on the head, tail, and legs; long, slightly curved, symmetrical horns that appear as one from the side, which might have inspired the unicorn myth. Females have slightly thinner and longer horns, while males have a slightly larger neck with a clump of hair on the throat. Calves are uniform brown. The Arabian oryx is the national animal of Jordan.
Moves in the cooler hours of the day. Digs shallow pits and rests in the cool sand around midday. A female leads the herd for long distances in search of vegetation, while the dominant male brings up the rear.
Feeds on and obtains moisture from vegetation.
Once extinct in Jordan, they are being reintroduced into Wadi Rum Protected Area and bred in captivity in the Shomari Reserve.
